Job Summary and Purpose:
The Welding Engineer cum CoE Trainer – Welding Technology Department will be responsible for preparing and qualifying Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs) and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) for various ferrous, non-ferrous, and alloy materials related to Shipbuilding and Heavy Engineering projects in compliance with international standards such as AWS, IACS, ASTM, and ASME.
This role also involves training welders across multiple processes, conducting Welder Qualification Tests (WQTs) approved by classification societies, and overseeing welding activities to ensure compliance with quality, safety, and performance standards. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in implementing advanced welding technologies to enhance productivity and quality outcomes.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain welding procedures and specifications in line with project requirements and industry standards.
- Supervise and optimize welding processes such as SAW, FCAW, GTAW, GMAW, and specialized automated techniques (e.g., Panel Line Welding Stations – TTS Make).
- Conduct regular inspections and quality checks to ensure weld integrity and compliance with safety and quality norms.
- Collaborate with Design and Engineering teams to assess material weldability and provide design recommendations.
- Coordinate with TPI / Classification Societies / Owner’s Representatives for workmen qualification and certification as per project requirements.
- Train and mentor welders on advanced techniques, process safety, and best welding practices.
- Evaluate and introduce new welding technologies and equipment to improve operational efficiency and quality standards.
- Troubleshoot welding-related issues, perform root cause analyses, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintain and ensure operational readiness of welding machines and spare equipment.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of welding procedures, qualifications, test results, and inspection records.
- Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations pertaining to welding operations.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills:
Educational Qualification:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Certifications (Preferred):
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or CSWIP 3.1
- ASNT Level II / III in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques
Experience:
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in Shipbuilding, Petrochemical, or Heavy Engineering industries.
- In-depth understanding of standards such as AWS D1.1, IACS W32/W33/W47, ASME Section II & IX, ASTM.
- Proven expertise in preparing and qualifying PQRs, WPSs, and WQTs across multiple welding processes.
Technical and Behavioral Competencies:
- Strong command over welding techniques and associated equipment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of international welding codes and standards (AWS, ASME, ISO).
- Ability to design, test, and qualify welding procedures effectively.
- Sound understanding of metallurgy and material science as it relates to welding.
- Proficiency in NDT methods and interpretation of test results.
- Familiarity with CAD software for technical reference and review.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to train, mentor, and coordinate across teams.
